8 – Passing into the future
The gradual realisation that the stillness and peace we seek is to be found within the mind is a beautiful and profound realisation. It is an awakening and a new understanding.
Imagine a tiny island that has appeared in the centre of a vast ocean, rising above the surrounding waters, with a clear and panoramic view of what lies all around, and of what exists above.
And as time passes, and the island develops stability, there arises a sense of permanence, safety and security, as the choppy waters and storms can no longer wash over the island or erode its shores.
This gradual change is similar to how our realisation of inner peace grows and develops, from our first brief initial glimpse, transforming over time into a stable and continual adventure of growth. And as time passes, the small events and trials that would have deeply upset or troubled us will lose any potential to affect our peace of mind, and then, as time moves into the future and we continue our practice, the capability to withstand emotional storms and tempests will improve.

Holding onto Happiness - 7
7 – Finding firm ground
The delicate positioning of our mind that we experience during our most subtle and gentle meditations can be fleeting and somewhat elusive.
The sole reason for this is our lack of familiarity with inner peace and stillness.
We have, throughout our lives, developed a default point in our minds, that state of mind when we think to ourselves 'this is me, the real me, and there is nothing I can do about it' - almost as if this is a genetic coding status that is unalterable... but...
This is not the case when it comes to who we think we are, as we can change the way we think about ourselves, and in effect create a new default point.
Gradually at first, but as we gain familiarity with our new happier, peaceful self, a new sense of identity will develop and we will identify ourselves anew.
From one single thought, that gradually firms and strengthens, the self knowledge of our new identity will improve and grow.
Visualise an enormous oil tanker, surging through the ocean, and the captain receives notification that she needs to turn around and head back to port. She knows that it will take miles of travel before the tanker can turn around and change direction, as the momentum carries the vessel onward and onward.
In the same way we have to change the momentum, shift the force of habit within our minds, and this takes time, but it can and will happen.
And, once started, the initially delicate sense of peace and contentment that we have found will develop and grow, into a deep and profound reservoir, an inner resource of continually developing depth… Yes, as good as it sounds…
So, take the time to familiarise yourself with the potential that resides within your beautiful new self, the happy and contented you.
